How can you estimate the difficulty of your hikes with Respyrénées?
At Respyrénées, we offer hiking trips tailored to different levels of difficulty: level 1 (gentle hike), level 2 (quite easy level), level 3 (medium level) and levels 4 and 5 for the more athletic.
But how can you assess your own level? If you live in a fairly flat area, it can be difficult to imagine what a 400m or 700m elevation gain looks like. This article will help you better understand each level using concrete examples of hikes in places you may already be familiar with!

Level 1: Beginner hiker
For our Level 1, ideal for "beginner hikers", you will walk an average of 3 to 5 hours per day, with slight elevation changes, on very easy trails and paths. This level is designed to allow you to enjoy nature without too much difficulty.
Example of preparation for level 1:
If you live in a flat area, a good way to prepare is to walk for 3 to 5 hours at a comfortable pace, then repeat these sessions for 2 or 3 days to get your body used to the effort.
Level 2: Occasional hiker
Level 2 is for more experienced hikers. You will walk 5 to 6 hours per day, with elevation gains of between 400 and 700 metres on trails that remain easy, smooth and rolling.
Here are some examples of Level 2 stays:
Terroirs of the Basque Country : welcome to our accommodation !
The best of the Basque Country, guided walking
Catalan Pyrenees : mountains and lakes, well-being and local heritage
The Best of the Cathar castles : from Carcassonne to Foix

Level 3: Regular hiker
Level 3 is intended for regular hikers with mountain hiking experience, ready for 6 to 7 hours of walking per day with more significant elevation changes. These hikes require good physical condition.
Examples of hikes for level 3:
A circuit where you can go up and down will allow you to build up muscle fatigue and elevation gain. Mountain bike circuits in the countryside are ideal to work on your endurance.
After thorough training in your local area, you will be ready to embark on one of our level 3 hiking trips, such as:
GR 10 guided section 1 : From Hendaye to St Jean Pied de Port
Splendid Nature Parks of the Spanish Basque Country
Great Crossing of the Basque Country
