Carcassonne and its famous medieval town
The city of Carcassonne is one of the most impressive fortifications in Europe, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This fortified town was a strategic base during the Crusade. Today, its medieval streets, bridges and restored towers take you back to the days when it was a Cathar stronghold and an essential royal fortress.
A walk on the ramparts is a must, with splendid views over the town and its surroundings.
Queribus: the Citadel of Vertigo
Built on its rocky outcrop, this eagle's nest was the last place of Cathar resistance during the Crusade against the Albigenses in 1255. Perched at 788m, its circular tower and walls seem to defy the laws of gravity. Magnificent landscapes unfold before your eyes, from the Canigou summit to the Roussillon and Corbieres plains.
The amazing fortress of Peyrepertuse
Peyrepertuse Castle rises to an altitude of over 800 metres. It is one of the largest fortresses in the Cathar region, stretching for around 300 metres and built directly into its limestone cliff face. You could almost mistake it for the surrounding landscape!
The castle is one of the most beautiful examples of a Cathar fortresses, part of the old line of defence of the ‘Five Sons of Carcassonne’.
Montsegur, the highest of the Cathar castles
The castle of Montsegur is an emblematic site in Cathar history, because of the tragedy that took place there in 1244. Perched at an altitude of 1,207 metres, it was the scene of the Cathars' final surrender after a ten-month siege. Today, the ruins of Montsegur are an emotional place of remembrance.
As well as its historical importance, the castle offers breathtaking views.
Roquefixade and its impressive cliffs
Overlooking a small village in the Ariège, Roquefixade castle is often less well known than its counterparts, but it offers a unique atmosphere. Perched on its rocky outcrop, it faces the fortress of Montsegur.
The panoramic view from the ruins is breathtaking, and a hike up to the castle reveals a peaceful site marked by history and the erosion of time.
The city of Foix and its castle
The Castle of Foix, dominated by its three towers, is one of the most remarkable monuments in Ariège. Situated in the heart of the town, the castle played a strategic role in the defence of the Ariège region, as well as serving as the residence of the Counts of Foix.
Today, its museum offers a fascinating immersion into medieval and Cathar history. You can explore the rooms of the castle while enjoying a magnificent view of the Pyrenees.
